Wireless adapter question?

when i switch my wireless adapter to use the windows wireless software and try to connect to my home network an error message comes up that says it can't connect even though the router is in the room next to mine. And when i use the adapter software it connects fine. how can i fix it so i can connect with the windows software. and by the way i have a linksys router and wireless card.

You don't say what version of Windows though, and that is the important thing here !

There are some services which need to be enabled to use the Windows software, which is something like wireless zero configuration when using XP and WLAN auto config when using Vista.

In XP...

View Available Wireless Connections.

If it says "Windows cannot configure...", click "Change advanced settings", Click Wireless Networks tab, checkmark in "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings". Click OK. Now try to view Connections again and set it to automatically connect to the one you want. You may need to disable the program that came with your adapter.
