This is so bizarre. I have a desktop PC and a laptop (with a wireless network card). I have a Cable Modem. I bought a Linksys wireless router (WRT54G) recently. Using an ethernet cable, I connect my desktop PC to the Linksys router; and, using the wireless connectively, I connect my laptop to the router. So both computers can access the Internet. Fine.
But nowadays my wired desktop PC loses contact with the router. I get a Windows message telling me a network cable is unplugged, which is 100% incorrect. I unplug then plug back the ethernet cable, but there are no blinking lights from the network interface card and the same Windows message appears. Meanwhile, my wireless laptop is fine.
I power down the modem, router and PC, then reboot. No lights from my network card, Windows message again, though cables are firmly in place. I unplug and then plug back the ethernet cables and then the connection is re-established. Then disconnects. I don't know why??
Any suggestions? Thanks!
A Network Cable is Unplugged, But All Cables are Connected?
there must be something wrong either with your ethernet cable or your network interface card. try using the cable with your laptop, if it connects then the trouble could be with your lan card.

The other users answer is the correct troubleshooting path you should take. I'm 99% sure it's probably just a bad cable between the desktop and the router. Worst case it's a bad Network Card, don't worry though a new card is very cheap, if you can't find a cheap one at Best Buy or Circuit City then order from newegg.
Installing a new network card is easy, don't pay someone to do it. You can find instructions online by using yahoo search.
Reply:Do you have the proper driver for your ethernet port? I'd check into that, and a new ethernet cord. Since your laptop is able to connect, I doubt it's the modem or the router.
