My computer has a built-in wireless connection, but it doesn't work?

I've had my lap top for more than a year and it hasn't given me any problems til this week. I have a router on my house computer, but when I want to connect to a network, it doesn't show any. It says that I need to install a wireless networking hardware...but it's built-in already!!

HEEEEELP!!

make sure your wireless card is enabled. my dell has a blue function key and F3, this turns off and on the signal. or check your control panel

hi florseet, this is the third time i have been talking to someone that is trying to go wireless and i am sorry to tell you that it just don't work. oh i can tell you that you need a router and an adaptor and a modem that is made for wireless connections but i am not going to do it because i am here to help you if i can but what we did is called our local dialup and they brought a modem in and it worked right off. i worked for a week to get us setup before i called my internet provider and tech and i worked for two days six hours per day and still didn't get it to work. linksys by zyxel just don't work but the modem they brought me was shooting out 10 and a half MGs a signal so i kept the modem but the rest was junk so listen to words of wisdom save your money it don't work. golly sounds like the twighlight zone but it's the truth. i am very advanced in pc repair it is the only thing i have ever gave up on and it hurts. like a bandetta if you know what i mean but it is junk. good luck hope i was helpful to you
Reply:The other answer is one possible solution, most laptops have a function key option to disable the wireless card.

Verify that the wireless card is enabled...

-Right click on "My Computer", from the drop down menu click on "Properties".

-A new window will appear, click on the tab "Hardware"

-Click the button "Device Manager"

-A new window will appear with a list of hardware, scroll down to "Network Adapters"

-Expand the item "Network Adapters" by clicking on the plus sign next to it.

-There should be an item which says something similar to "wireless adapter".

-If there is a red "X", that indicates the hardware is disabled.

-To enable the hardware once again right click on the adapater and select the option "Enable" from the drop down menu.

-If there is NO red "X" then double click on the wireless adapter hardware

-A new window should pop-up and near the middle there should be a section labeled "Device Status". It should say "This device is working properly." If not please give the error it is displaying.

-If the status shows "This device is working properly." click the "Troubleshoot..." button. Follow the steps and this may help you in your search for the problem.

That said, have you eliminated the wireless router as the problem? Can you have someone else try to connect to your wireless network with a different computer? If not, try power cycling (pulling the power cord out of both and waiting 1 minutes before plugging them back in) both your wireless router and the cable modem.

Good luck, and worst case you will need to purchase an external wireless card for your laptop which costs about $25 these days so don't stress too hard. If it is in fact your wireless router you can find those pretty cheap too. I've included a couple of links on where you can find cheap wireless gear. Well cheaper then Best Buy anyway.
Reply:SEE IF YOUR WIRELESS ADAPTER IS ENABLED TO SEE THE NETWORK FROM YOUR DESKTOP CONNECTION.(DEVICE MANAGER/NETWORK ADAPTER,ETC.
