My desktop is not showing a Internet connection yet the lights are saying its receiving signal?

It's a older HP Desktop. When i got back form Iraq the PSU was bad. It is now changed and the computer is running just fine. The problem is it is not showing a Internet connection yet it is plugged in. It has a on board Ethernet port and both lights are showing that it is getting signal yet it cant establish connection. I bought a etherfast PCI card and put it in thinking the onboard one might be bad. I am still having the same problem. It is NOT the modem because it works on my laptop. i have had it plugged straight from the modem and its not showing a connection. The drivers were installed off the disk sucessfully. what else is there to check or do?

Since you said you have just got back from Iraq, I'm assuming you are an Armed Service member. First off thank you very much for serving the country!





It's possible it's not a hardware issue, but a software one (Virus or Maleware) I'm also assuming you are using Internet Explorer. Try downloading a third party browser (firefox) and using it. If that doesn't connect either, then it still could be a software issue. Try using Lavasoft's free Malware scanner to detect any issues. If still no workie, then try using the free online antivirus scanner from trend micro. Good luck
