Pro's and Con's to both
Linux Pros
--------------------------------
Cheap
Similar to Microsoft
Not many common people know linux (a very marketable skill when entering the job market)
Linux Cons
---------------------------------
Hard to figure out
Not many people use it (incompatibilities with microsoft)
Microsoft Pros
--------------------------------
Everyone uses it
Easy to figure out
Compatible with most machines
Microsoft Cons
---------------------------------
Expensive
Security Flaws
In the end, I would say stick with Microsoft. Leave Linux for the IT crowd, unless you are going to school for IT.
Differential between linux and mikrosoft, which one is better for university studunts?
microsoft for college.
1. if doing work in a classroom on computer linux might not accept work saved from a travel drive that they worked on before hand making it so they cant work on it during class.
2. microsoft is easier to use.
3. its easy to instal and learn how to use.

I already agree with both answers, but I would like to add something... you may want to consider a dual boot. Reason being, you want this machine probably for a few years in college, you want it to last. You do not want to have to reinstall windows when/if you get a virus. I might think of keeping your windows side strictly for school. Use your linux side for the surfing, email and all the stuff outside of school.
With linux there is so much less chance of getting a virus, you will have the stability and security needed while being online. With windows you will have the compatibility needed possibly for school work.
Just another thought, but both answers prior to mine are great too.
Reply:A great deal will depend on your major.
If you are an engineering major - the chances are that you will do a lot of work in AutoCad. It's Windows only, so there is no choice there. Other CAD programs have Linux versions - you will have to see what flavor of CAD your school uses
Science or Computer Science major - Again, not much choice. You will be using Linux or Unix or both. Windows will be sneered at as that "other OS"
Graphic Design - This has been a Mac stronghold from the beginning. Windows has made some inroads, but if it's your major, you'll use a Mac
Other Majors - Open Office has enough compatibility with MS Office to allow you to save and create documents in .doc format that are acceptable to anyone. Here is where Linux allows you to save a few bucks and get the job done.
Who says that the computer world is not competitive?
