Dear
Please anybody let me know the difference between normal LAN switch comparison to CISCO LAN Swich. What is the significant performance provided by CISCO LAN Switch over normal LAN Switch?
Appreciate if you would come back soon.
Regards
Pervez

The benefits to a Cisco switch are the ability to differentiate different types of data traffic and treat those streams differently. For example if you are using IP Phones you can mark voice traffic and prioritize it on your network. If you are just trying to decide on a switch for your small office or home office, then 99% of the time you will be perfectly fine with any LAN switch.
Cisco also provides benefits of having a certification program and value added resellers who will provide certified engineers who will program your switch for you.
I'm a Cisco Certified Network Professional and half the time I see people in small offices wasting money on a cisco switch that they will never fully use. Don't get me wrong, I love Cisco, but they are expensive.

Your unmanaged LAN switch is just that, unman aged. Traffic is treated on a "first come - first served" basis. You have no control on how the switch operates and no control over how bandwidth and traffic is prioritized.
Now in your typical 5 - 500 person small business network, none of this is an issue. There is more than enough room in the pipe that you never see a bottleneck
When you move up to large office complexes where we may be talking about 1000's of computers and people, traffic management, and the ability to control how bandwidth is shared, becomes very important. This is where Cisco makes their bucks.
Reply:the first two answers are good, I just wanted to add that with a Cisco switch you have the ability to designate VLANs and other security measures that you don't have with a simple switch. You can shutdown specific ports so not just anyone can plug into your network. You can assign MAC addresses to ports so no one can plug in a foreign computer to your network, if they do that port will shut down until the administrator opens that port back up. There are many other options as well, but the main benefits of a cisco switch will be to that of a very large network.
