i have two pcs at home and they are connected with ethernet cable with the router and the router is connected with the modem.why do i need a router to connect the pcs with the modem ?the modem has enough ports to connect the pcs with it.
does the modem have a switch in it?

routers now are generally used for wireless access. you may need to upgrade or buy a wireless adapter depending on the type of router you have. the modem is for receiving the Ethernet signal. there is usually one port for the main computer. others may be fax lines?
