If you have more than one pcs do you need an ethernet broadband router to connect them to the modem?

why?i have two pcs and i connect them to the modem through an ethernet broadband router but the modem has enough ports to connect them to it.why do i use a router?why dont i use a switch?

Your DSL modem might not have a firewall built into it. The router probably does.

If your modem is also a combination router then no, you don't need a(nother) router. But the reason for using a router, even if you have only one PC is that it acts as a firewall between you and the internet. Otherwise your PC is directly exposed to the internet and all of its evildoers. Even if you have firewall software on your PC (don't even think that Windows Firewall is real firewall protection), the internet is right up at your door. The best protection is a hardware firewall (so that the internet doesn't even get to your door) together with a software firewall.
