1 Cable Modem 2 Computers?

Is there any possible way i could get 2 computers to work off of one Cable Modem? I don't have a Wireless Router. . . I know about TV Cable Splitters. . .. I was wondering if there was anything such "Ethernet Splitter" so i can have one Ethernet cord goin to my desktop and the other coming to my laptop. . Is there any way to do that?

A router would be the best choice... and there is no ethernet splitter.
1 Cable Modem 2 Computers?
ufff there are many of them they are know as routers go to local computer store to buy one. they donot cost much
Reply:It's called a HUB.. but if you are going to get a HUB, you might as well get a wireless router, so you don't have to have the laptop plugged into it.
Reply:Nope sorry, you will need a router. There pretty cheap these days, try looking on craigslist may be able to find one for like $20

---hubs do not have the hardware or software for internet, hubs just let computers "talk" with each other....
Reply:That "ethernet splitter" is called a switch. here is a link to buy one at circuit city. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Linksys-5...

you plug the cord that comes out of your cable modem into the first port, and then you have 4 extra ethernet ports for your computers and laptops. you might need to purchase an etherenet cord (CAT5) for your laptop to connect to the switch if you don't already have one. They run around $7.99 for a 6 foot cord.
Reply:Simple solution, go purchase a router. Go on ebay and purchase a DI-605 Dlink router.

Here is a current router you can purchase from Tigerdirect.com. All you need is a four port router. Not only will you be able to use the same modem, but you can also network your computers.
Reply:All you need is a Ethernet switch. You would connect the switch to the Cable Modem, and then connect as many ethernet devices (computers, laptops, ethernet printers and so on) to the switch, depending upon how many outgoing ethernet ports your switch has.

If you think you cannot afford a router/switch, think again, can you afford not to have one? May be YES, if you don't want to connect both computers.

Another way out, is you can connect the desktop to the cable modem directly and the laptop wirelessly, if the cable modem lets you do that.
Reply:I am a former employee of at%26amp;t DSL. Worked in a call center answering questions like this....the only way to go is with a router. If you should find a "ethernet splitter" actually exists you would find that the signal is so degraded it would be useless.
Reply:You have to have a router, hub, etc. The router does not need to be a "wireless" router. But if eventually you are going to get a laptop or want to have the computers in different rooms you best choice would be to get a wireless router.
Reply:There are two ways... one cheap but less reliable, they other is more expensive and more reliable.

1. get a usb network adapter and plug it into your computer and then use an ethernet cable to connect it to your laptop. This is called internet connection sharing in windows.

2. get a small router, and connect your cable modem to it, and both the computer and the laptop to the router.

----------------------------

#1 will only work if the computer is turned on, and can provide slow connectivity if it running at high load.

#2 will always work as the router is normally left on 24/7
Reply:there are no Ethernet splitters. i got asked that question a lot at compusa (RIP)

you need an Ethernet router for that and don't need an expensive one with all the bells and whistles unless you want it

could probably find a used one for $10 and a decent new one for $20~$30, a good wireless one (for your laptop maybe?) would start you off around $50 and can easily go over $100
Reply:The equivalent to a splitter for networking would be a hub or a switch. The only way those can be used is if your ISP gives you more than 1 IP address and it it probably does not. In which case you will need a router. It uses the IP address that your ISP gives you and in turn gives your 2 PC's local IP addresses and then all information is routed to the internet with the router.
Reply:just connect to computers to each other via a Ethernet cable like CAT5 then share your internet connection its all
